Mission and Generic Information
If there was ever a man to understand and inspire children who use wheelchairs it's John Maclean. At age 22, John was tragically hit by a truck while training for a triathlon. The horrific injuries left John a paraplegic.
John, never being one to let the world pass him by, set about redefining and establishing a new set of goals for himself. John has achieved extraordinary sporting feats that now place him as one of the most respected athletes in the world.
In the years since his accident, amongst many extraordinary, John has become the first wheelchair athlete to:
- Complete the gruelling Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon (in "able-bodied" cut off times)
- Swim the English Channel
- Complete the Molokai Challenge
During his years as a professional athlete, John has looked to many people, friends and "families" for support to get through tough times and reach extraordinary heights. Recognising the value of this support, John established the John Maclean Foundation in 1998. The foundation is a national scale organization providing support and assistance to Australian wheelchair users under the age of 18.
John's personal mission statement is - "ONLY POSSIBILITIES".
This empowering philosophy is central to both John and the John Maclean Foundation.
The foundation's mission is to inspire, motivate and enable physically challenged kids to chase their dreams and live life to the fullest. If you ask John, it's his greatest achievement.
